I have recently read the book ‘Shikorer Sondhane’ by Hamida Mubasshera, published in the ‘Ekushe Boi Mela’, 2020. It has been an excellent read as it brings to life a very important part of human history- the series of events that led to the emergence of three distinct religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

I believe so many of the massive social, economic and political turmoil’s that took place throughout history due to religious differences could have been avoided only if the Jews and Christians recognized and accepted that they and the Muslims are connected to a common thread of Divine message revealed by the same Divine source and preached by the same unbroken chains of prophets. This book does a great job in taking us back to the root of how these theological differences came about and how they evolved over time through fluid storytelling with excerpts from Quran and other Islamic and secular scholarly resources. I appreciate that the author talks about the importance of being aware of ‘confirmation bias’ and the dire need for intellectual honesty in any such quest for truth.

The author also introduces us to some examples of the beauty and precision of the language of Quran. She challenges us to take a soul-searching journey to assess if we are increasingly embodying the same reprehensible characteristics of some of the earlier communities that Allah warned us against through the verses about Bani Israel.

However, this is not a book on Fiqh and I think this book should not be used as a conclusive reference on Fiqh issues. The greatest success of the book was to make me more eager to study the Quran more deeply. May Allah reward the author and everyone who helped to publish this book which I believe is a valuable contribution to Bangla Islamic literature.
